Is a Level 3 Trading Qualification Worth It? A Former LIFFE Trader’s View

By Martin Hills, founder of Financial eLearning and former LIFFE floor trader

When people talk about trading today, it’s often presented as fast, easy, or something you can shortcut your way through. That hasn’t been my experience – and if you’re wondering whether a Level 3 trading qualification is worth it, that’s the first thing I’d want you to understand.

Where I’m coming from

I started my career in 1989 on the floor of LIFFE, the London International Financial Futures Exchange, and later traded on the International Petroleum Exchange (IPE). It was an environment where mistakes were immediate and accountability was unavoidable.

From there I moved to screen-based trading as the markets evolved – trading interest rates, futures, oil and FX, in proprietary environments and for institutions. I’ve traded through volatile periods, changing market structures and different trading models, and worked closely with banks, hedge funds and professional trading desks on how they access and interpret market data.

What actually made the difference

It wasn’t a single strategy or setup.

It was education, structure and understanding risk.

The traders who lasted weren’t the ones chasing wins. They were the ones who understood market structure, position sizing, discipline, and how to survive when conditions changed.

I’ve seen too many people come into trading without foundations – relying on tips, signals or unstructured learning. Some get lucky for a while, but markets eventually expose gaps in knowledge and discipline. When that happens, the consequences are real.

So, is a Level 3 trading qualification worth it?

It depends on what you want from it. Here’s my honest view.

It’s worth it if you:

  • Are new to trading and want a structured, credible starting point
  • Want to understand how markets, trading roles and risk actually work before putting money at risk
  • Are considering a career in finance and want a recognised, regulated qualification
  • Want to find out whether trading is genuinely right for you

It’s not for you if you:

  • Are looking for a quick way to make money
  • Want someone to hand you a “winning strategy”
  • Aren’t prepared to treat trading as a professional skill

I don’t believe in shortcuts and I don’t believe in profit promises. I believe in education, structure and realism.

What a Level 3 qualification actually gives you

Our Level 3 Certificate in Financial Trading exists to build foundations – and, just as importantly, to help people decide whether trading is right for them at all. It covers how financial markets work, the different trading roles, technical analysis, risk management and trading psychology.

  • VTCT-accredited, Ofqual-regulated
  • 45 guided learning hours, typically 4–6 weeks
  • 100% online, at your own pace, with secure online assessment
  • No previous trading experience needed

It also sets you up for the next step. The Level 5 Diploma in Financial Trading is the professional standard – where advanced capability, decision-making and discipline are developed in a structured, assessed way.

What learners say

Maddie came into the course with no background in finance: “If you’re changing careers, this course gives you the real foundation.” Jude put it like this: “It wasn’t about making a quick profit. It was about learning how trading actually works and how to stay disciplined.” You can read and watch more on our reviews page.

My advice

If you’re serious about learning trading properly and you’re prepared to approach it as a professional skill, a structured qualification is a realistic place to start. If you’re not sure yet, that’s exactly what Level 3 is designed to help you find out.
